We have had a long weekend as a result of freezing weather. It was pretty much a non-event here in town but very slippery elsewhere. I used the time to catch up on grading. Finals next week and graduation Friday. Back to school tomorrow, I'm a bit concerned about whether students will make it for finals.
A few days ago I received an e-mail from George, who I graduated from high school with in Minneapolis many years ago, asking if he could come to visit Tuesday afternoon. However, here it was Tuesady morning and he was pulling up in front of my house. In as much I hadn't seen a fellow graduate of Thomas Alva Edison in half century we began to talk. His wife had died a few weeks ago and he was on the road visiting old friends. He wanted to know how I handled the death of my wife. I doubt I was much help but we shared stories. At noon we went to DeGray Lodge for lunch and then came back to the house and talked till about 6:00 p.m. when he decided to go on his way. It was fun to reminisce about our lives in high school, I was at Edison only three semesters, but we were geeks who played chess, took physics and chemistry and solved math problems with our slide rules. George dated my sister a pretty redhead, we played basketball, and cruised the streets of Minneapolis. As we discussed our lives it turned out that several times we lived in the same states, we both went into teaching and had three children. Anyway, it was nice to walk down memory lane.
Class time in a few minutes. I'll need to push my students to use the SMARTboard. It is fun to use but is new to them and they have to get up in front of their peers. They think they can learn to use it sitting at a PC but that is not true you have to get your hands on it to learn it.
I'm expecting an advisee this afternoon to complete her application for graduation. Along with registering students as freshmen I find the process of completing the graduation applications special. As we pass through these transition points we have a time to look back and look ahead.
I've met both sections of Educational Technology, my one section of Educational Psychology and tomorrow evening I'll meet my one section of Technology and Curriculum. I look forward to having all of my courses met for the first time. This looks like an interesting group of students. Some are students I've had before, generally that is a good thing. It is always good to start another academic year.
It is a hot August morning and I'll be back to work soon. Meetings next week then classes the last week in August. This semester I'll add Weebly to my list of sites where students will be able to create there webpages. This summer I changed Ed-Psych texts. The new book is shorter and less expensive but the old.
10:00 a.m. Wednesday 9/4/2013 My Sister Sheri is a year older today. Today my Ed Tech students will start working on their own web sites. |
